Ghana's 2024 general elections, held on December 7, was marked by a series of violent incidents despite the country’s reputation for relatively peaceful elections.
While official results from the Electoral Commission (EC) are still pending, provisional results have indicated a strong showing for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, the electoral process has been overshadowed by reports of clashes and disturbances, raising concerns about the security and fairness of the polls.
The violence, which occurred in several constituencies, has sparked debates about the need for stronger measures to ensure peaceful elections in the future.
On Monday, December 9, a near brawl broke out at the old EC office, where various parliamentary candidates were observing the collation of their pending results. The police swiftly intervened to calm the situation.
A physical altercation erupted between two soldiers and citizens at Obuasi amid the elections.
At the Techiman South collation centre, ballot papers were destroyed.
At the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, some persons, reportedly NDC sympathizers, burnt ballot papers being brought to the collation centre, alleging that they haven't been stamped and are thus invalid.
The commotion has led to calls for military reinforcements as police work to control the situation.
Scores of angry voters clashed with security personnel at the Coalition centre at OLAM SHS, Tema East Constituency. The windscreen of a Prisons' officer who transported EC officials from Tema Newton was smashed.
Chaos erupted at the Damongo District Court collation centre as distraught youths demanded the EC declare results. Stones were hurled at officials, breaking louvres. The military intervened to restore order.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has made a number of arrests.
