Nigerian artist Shallipopi opened up in a recent interview about the challenges he faced trying to connect with top musicians before his fame took off.
Reflecting on those early days, Shallipopi admitted that many of his messages to established artists went unanswered, a situation he believes is familiar to many up-and-coming musicians.
Rather than taking the silence personally, he recognized that these artists were simply busy and unaware of him at the time.
“They’re just focused on their own lives and work,” he explained, “so if you’re still unknown, it’s natural they might not respond. But when you make it, that’s when they start reaching out.”
As his music began gaining traction, Shallipopi eventually caught the attention of one of his inspirations, singer Rema.
He revealed that his message to Rema led to a collaboration on the track Benin Boys only after his rising popularity made their connection possible.
Shallipopi described the process, explaining that while he initially reached out, it was his growing success that eventually brought them together in the studio.
Shallipopi’s advice to emerging artists in similar situations is to stay persistent.
With hard work and patience, he believes recognition will come.
