Ghanaian socialite and singer Sister Derby recently opened up about her challenges finding employment in the UK after completing her master’s degree.
During an appearance on 3 Music TV’s The Big Conversation, the "Kakalika Love" singer shared how losing a £700 internship led her into an uphill battle for stable work.
She revealed that despite applying to numerous companies and attending several interviews, particularly with leading publishing firms, she was consistently turned down. After facing numerous rejections in her job search, Sister Derby said she sought advice from her professors.
However, one professor explained that her difficulty in securing a job was due to the UK recession, pointing out that British citizens were prioritized over foreign applicants.
Frustrated by the lack of success, even after signing up with several job agencies, she eventually decided to return to Ghana.
"I went to so many job interviews in big publishing companies but I wasn't called… I registered with a lot of different agencies for jobs but I wasn't called too, so I decided to come back to Ghana," she said.
"When I decided to return to Ghana and look for a job here, I happened to be on the last Ghana Airwaves flight I think somewhere in January 2010," she disclosed.
Deborah Owusu-Bonsu (born 25 August 1984) better known by her stage name as Sister Derby or Sister Deborah is a Ghanaian-Romanian television presenter, musician and model of Akan origin and a former presenter at ETV Ghana.
