In a shocking display of violence, students of Christian Methodist Senior High School in Weija brutally assaulted a fellow student after accusing him of stealing a mobile phone.
A viral video circulating on social media captures the disturbing scene, where an enraged mob stormed a nearby store in an attempt to continue their attack on the victim. However, some residents in the area swiftly intervened, preventing further harm.
Despite the intervention, the furious students attempted to overpower those trying to restrain them. After a tense confrontation, the residents managed to disperse the attackers and escort the victim to safety.
Another video shows the battered student with a swollen face and a bloody mouth, struggling to speak as he attempts to recount his ordeal. The brutality of the assault has sparked outrage online, with many X (formerly Twitter) users condemning the act and calling for stricter measures to curb violence in schools.
This incident adds to growing concerns about rising indiscipline among students in second-cycle institutions. Recently, authorities at Sokode Senior High/Technical School in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region had to shut down the school temporarily due to security threats after violent clashes between students and local youth from the Gbogame community.
Reports indicate that some male students had illegally left the school premises and attacked local youth at pubs, believing they were responsible for an earlier assault on a fellow student at a beans eatery. In retaliation, about 40 armed youth from Gbogame stormed the male dormitories, destroying property.
With cases of student violence on the rise, some education stakeholders are advocating for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools to curb indiscipline.
The attack on the Christian Methodist SHS student also reflects the increasing trend of ‘instant justice’, where mobs take the law into their own hands by violently punishing suspected offenders. However, such acts are illegal under Ghanaian law, which requires citizens to report suspected crimes to the police for proper investigations and due process.
Authorities are urging schools and communities to reinforce discipline and encourage peaceful conflict resolution to prevent further violent incidents.
