Suspension, Bill footing: Speaker Bagbin goes after MPs who led choas during Thursday's vetting

Speaker Alban Bagbin has announced decisive actions against MPs who played a central role in the violent disruption of Thursday’s ministerial vetting session. The MPs responsible for the chaos will be held financially accountable for the damage caused to parliamentary property during the altercation.
The incident occurred when tensions between the Majority and Minority factions turned physical after the Majority insisted on continuing the vetting session past 10 PM, a move strongly opposed by the Minority. As the disagreement escalated, Minority MPs began tearing down tables, leading to microphones crashing to the floor and breaking.
The situation quickly deteriorated, necessitating police intervention to restore order. Despite attempts by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and other leaders to de-escalate the conflict, the damage to the parliamentary equipment led to the adjournment of the session.
In response to the disruption, Speaker Bagbin outlined several steps to address the fallout:
Suspension of MPs Involved: Four MPs, including Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor and Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, have been suspended for two weeks. During this period, they will be barred from participating in parliamentary sittings and activities.
Criminal Complaint to the Police: The Clerk of Parliament has been instructed to file a criminal complaint with the police, which will trigger an investigation into the incident. Those found responsible for the violence may face legal prosecution.
Reconstitution of the Appointments Committee: The Committee on Selection has been tasked with reconstituting the Appointments Committee to restore its functionality and ensure the smooth continuation of parliamentary duties.
Assessment of Property Damage: A thorough assessment of the damage to parliamentary property will be conducted. MPs found responsible for the destruction of tables and microphones will be required to cover the costs of repairs or replacement.
Seven-Member Investigative Committee: A seven-member investigative committee, led by Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has been established to conduct a detailed inquiry into the events. The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations within the next 10 days.
Speaker Bagbin’s response reflects a strong commitment to upholding discipline and accountability in Parliament, ensuring that such incidents are not repeated. The measures taken aim to restore order and prevent further disruptions in the future.
