Show and Shame: Drivers, 'trotro mates' defying 15% reduction in transport fares directive

Some commercial drivers and their conductors, popularly known as 'trotro mates,' are defying the recent directive to slash transport fares by 15%, drawing public outrage and sparking a wave of citizen-led accountability efforts.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) announced the fare reduction on Wednesday, May 21, following discussions with the Ministry of Transport.
The new fares, which took effect on Saturday, May 24, were introduced in response to recent macroeconomic improvements—particularly the sustained appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar and other major currencies.
However, several days into the implementation, a significant number of drivers continue to charge commuters the old fares, disregarding the directive and undermining efforts to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians.
In response, commuters have started exposing these drivers and mates, using social media and other platforms to highlight instances where the fare reduction has been ignored.
Photos, videos, and testimonies are being shared in what has become a “show and shame” campaign aimed at pressuring operators to comply.
