Presence of military officers at polling stations causes unrest

By: Nii Ammui Fio | 1 min read

Unrest broke out in the Obuasi East constituency of the Ashanti region during the 2024 elections as electorates clashed with military officers at the Akaporiso polling station.
The tension started when a man, identified only as Hakiki, challenged the soldiers’ presence, which violated earlier assurances from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) that no military personnel would be deployed.
Reports indicate that Hakiki, a Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was severely beaten during the altercation.
In addition, military officers were spotted at the University of Ghana, Legon campus, carrying canes and guns. A video emerged showing them attempting to seize the phone of an electorate, escalating the unrest.
