"I respect the decision of Ghanaians," New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said as he conceded defeat to the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 presidential elections.
Addressing the press on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia announced that he had called Mahama to congratulate him on his victory, acknowledging that results from the NPP's internal collation confirmed the NDC's decisive win.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the media, following yesterday's presidential and parliamentary elections, Ghanaians at home and abroad have been sitting on tenterhooks awaiting the outcome of the elections. Let me say that the data from our own internal collation of the election results indicates that former president H.E. John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively.
"The NDC has also won the parliamentary election even though we await final collation for a number of seats; however, I believe ultimately that this will not change the overall outcome. I have just called H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana," he stated.
Dr. Bawumia urged calm among citizens, stating his commitment to "respect the decision of Ghanaians" and ensure peace.
"I will stop the growing tension," he added.
He further expressed gratitude to NPP supporters for their efforts and pledged to stand with Mahama to move the country forward.
While the Electoral Commission is yet to officially declare the results, provisional figures show the NDC has secured both the presidency and over 130 parliamentary seats.
