Citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will continue to enjoy key regional benefits even after their countries' withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) became effective on January 29, 2025.
In a bid to maintain stability and regional cooperation, ECOWAS has confirmed that national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo will remain valid for travel within the region until further notice.
Trade relations will also be upheld, with goods and services from the three nations continuing to be treated under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies. This ensures businesses and economic activities remain uninterrupted across member states.
Additionally, citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will retain their right to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS countries, allowing them to travel, live, and work without restrictions.
ECOWAS has also instructed that officials from these three nations continue receiving full support and cooperation while carrying out assignments for the regional body.
These temporary arrangements will remain in effect as ECOWAS leaders engage in discussions to define the future relationship with the three former member states. A special structure has been set up to facilitate dialogue and address the modalities of their engagement moving forward.
The measures are intended to prevent disruptions in trade, travel, and daily life for citizens and businesses during this transition period.
