Effutu Member of Parliament and Majority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has broken his silence on the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) overwhelming defeat in the 2024 general election conducted on December 7.The ruling party suffered significant losses, paving the way for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to dominate the 9th Parliament with a historic majority of at least 170 seats and counting.
Afenyo-Markin, who successfully defended his parliamentary seat despite the party's challenges, admitted the loss was a tough pill to swallow but maintained that it was an opportunity for growth.
“In 2016, we had a resounding victory, and today, we find ourselves on the other side of the equation. It’s a reminder that elections are a part of the process, not the conclusion. The political landscape is ever-changing, and this loss does not define us.
“The result stings, and I know it hurts. But we must remember that this is not the end of the journey. As a party, we will regroup, reassess, and strategise to win the hearts of Ghanaians once again,” he said while addressing the media after winning is reelection bid.
Afenyo-Markin asserted that the outcome of the election is the will of Ghanaians and must be respected.
“If the electorate has decided to place their trust in the NDC this time around, we must honour that decision. The people have spoken, and it is their choice we must respect, even if it differs from ours,” he added.Following protracted delays, Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensa finally announced the results of the 2024 presidential election, solidifying former President John Mahama's win following Bawumia's early concession.
Mahama, the former president of Ghana from 2012 to 2016, received 56.55% of the vote, more than his primary opponent, Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, who received 6,328,397 votes.
The election results were validated following a careful assessment of the votes from around the country. The EC head claims that the commission failed to finish the collation procedure in nine constituencies that were left out of the results that were announced.
In an earlier address, Dr Bawumia made the surrender, recognizing the people's will and calling for a peaceful and orderly handover of power. In the speech, he congratulated Mahama and urged Ghanaians to support the incoming government for the country's prosperity. He also called for national unity.
