President John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana, with his appointment pending approval from the Council of State.
Dr. Asiamah’s nomination comes ahead of the impending retirement of the current Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, who is set to begin his leave in preparation for retirement on March 28, 2025.
Dr. Asiamah, a seasoned financial expert, previously held the role of Second Deputy Governor at the central bank between 2016 and 2017. He brings over two decades of experience in monetary policy, economic research, and financial stability regulation.
Holding a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton in the UK, Dr. Asiamah’s long-standing tenure at the Bank of Ghana has seen him play a pivotal role in shaping national financial policies.
In his new role, Dr. Asiamah is expected to continue fostering financial stability, overseeing the implementation of robust monetary policies, and contributing to Ghana’s economic development.
Dr. Ernest Addison, who has served as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana since April 2017, will conclude his tenure in March 2025. Appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo following the resignation of Dr. Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku, Dr. Addison has been a key figure in Ghana's financial landscape. Before his appointment as Governor, Dr. Addison held the position of Lead Regional Economist at the African Development Bank's Southern African Resource Centre.
With an impressive academic background, Dr. Addison holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Ghana, an M.Phil in Economics and Politics from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in Economics from McGill University in Canada. His earlier career includes serving as the Director of Research at the Bank of Ghana from 2003 to 2011 and as the Chief Economist at the West African Monetary Institute from 2001 to 2002.
