The second edition of the 2024 African Military Games taking place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja kicked off on November 20.
During its launch, there was a march parade where the participating nations showcased their skills. The momentum was volatile.
Four days into the event, and Nigeria is already leading the medal table with 15 medals. The Nigerian Armed Forces secured five gold medals in women’s wrestling, six silver medals in men’s Greco-Roman wrestling, and four bronze medals in men’s Greco-Roman wrestling.
Additionally, Nigeria clinched two gold medals in handball, defeating Ghana in the finals of both the men’s and women’s events.
In men’s football, Nigeria faced a narrow 1-0 loss to Cameroon, while Algeria defeated Equatorial Guinea 2-0 in another match.
In the men’s taekwondo competition: The first fight between Senegal and Libya saw Senegal emerge victorious.
The second fight between Cameroon and Nigeria ended with a win for Cameroon.
Tunisia defeated Senegal in the third fight, while Algeria triumphed over Senegal in the fourth fight.
In women’s taekwondo, Nigeria’s Rejoice claimed the gold medal via a walkover.
Caroline Linus of Nigeria (Blue) defeated Veronica Mbithe of Kenya (Red) in the women’s boxing final.
In men's boxing, Ghana (Blue) defeated Nigeria (Red).
Kenya’s Gur Meshack Babu has emerged as the winner of the men’s 100m finals in a time of 10:57 seconds.
Ghana’s Shuaibu Marizuk finished second in a time of 10:59 seconds, while Jeovany Ramos Andrade of Cape Verde finished third in a time of 10.67 seconds.
In the women’s final, Kate Agyeman of Ghana took first place in 11.50 seconds, with Mary Boakye closely behind with 11.50, while Loice Morara of Kenya clocked 12.00 seconds.
Nigerian Aniebiet John finished fourth in 12.30 seconds.
Athletes from military establishments across Africa are competing in nearly 20 sports, which include athletics, football, basketball, golf, shooting, judo, volleyball, cycling, handball, boxing, and more.
The games which present a unique opportunity for our armed forces to showcase their skills, foster camaraderie amongst participants, and strengthen military cooperation and partnership, is slated to end on November 30.
