Two people have been killed in separate incidents of electoral violence during the 2024 Ghana elections.
The most recent fatality occurred in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central Region, where a shooting left one person dead and another critically injured.
Reports indicate that the victims, both supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were attacked by unknown assailants in a V8 vehicle after NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, allegedly declared herself the winner of the election.
The attackers followed the group as they left the vote counting and collation centre, opening fire as they headed home.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the victims were affiliated with Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor. In relation to the development, four individuals have been arrested for wielding weapons, and a video circulating on social media shows the suspects being escorted to a police station.
The suspects are Awudu Yakubum, Kwabena Essah, Hakeem Bawa and Issaka Mashual. One AK47 rifle with 69 rounds of ammunition has been retrieved from the suspects.
Awutu Senya East has previously been a hotspot for electoral violence, with similar incidents reported in past elections.
This incident marks the second election-related death, following a fatal shooting in the Tolon Constituency of the Northern Region, which also resulted in one death. The Police have arrested four suspects in connection with that case.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are urging calm as the electoral process moves forward.
